WEC ROUNDTABLE: Preparing the Next Generation of Engineering Students to Implement Sustainable Development

At present, the teaching of sustainability challenges varies considerably across nations and within the university community, and only a select number of universities have integrated sustainability within their core engineering curriculum. The highly dynamic role of sustainability in the global marketplace and public policy, juxtaposed with existing methods of teaching the subject in classrooms, creates numerous opportunities for innovation and new thought leadership by engineering schools, the organizations that recruit engineering students for future employment and students directly.

An evaluation of this subject is both timely and relevant. The Roundtable will address three major issues: 1) current practices for integrating sustainability into the engineering school curricula; 2) identification of skill sets desired by global companies for their new engineering employees; and 3) review of approaches to enable engineering schools and the private sector to more closely collaborate.

This invitation-only event is being sponsored by Boeing, CH2M Hill, The Dow Chemical Company and Royal Dutch Shell—all major employers of engineering professionals. For more information please see the final agenda.

Companies, non-governmental organizations, and other major sustainability participants increasingly conclude that they will be more successful in achieving their organizational objectives by collaborating with other organizations with aligned interests. As no single institution has the capacity to provide global scale solutions to sustainability challenges, new collaboration strategies and practices are emerging that integrate the solution of business problems with societal needs. Collaboration amongst different stakeholders generates new insights on strategies for value creation, motivates partnerships for innovation across value chains and has the potential to create solutions at greater than pilot level scale. The Roundtable objectives included:

Understanding how shared value can be created through innovative collaborations

Examining leadership examples of new forms of collaboration

Evaluating specific competencies that are necessary to achieve success through collaboration

Many experts envision that cities of the future will utilize more
sustainable water, waste, energy, and transportation infrastructures.
But, what will drive the innovation needed to create these cities? And,
what role will government, industry, and NGOs play in bringing about
this innovation?

Focusing on case studies related to sustainable transportation and
energy efficiency, the workshop will bring together representatives from
corporations, NGOs, and federal, state and local governments to discuss
the various technologies and products that corporations have created
for more sustainable cities. Participants will also discuss what has
driven and will be needed to drive innovation and the expansion of these
technologies and products across the country and globe.

WEC Executive Roundtable, hosted by Merck KGaA.

A Summary of this event is available here.

Global companies face additional challenges when doing business in less developed nations. Poverty, substantial income disparities, insufficient infrastructure, weak and often corrupt governance structures, lack of security and low enforcement of the law counteract a functioning market.

Under these circumstances global companies face unique challenges to live up to their corporate responsibility standards. Since their stakeholders expect high ethical and environmental standards to apply worldwide, multinational enterprises must take extra care in their own and supply chain operations– or risk losing their license to operate. In an increasing number of less developed nations, well-informed members of civil society are expressing their concerns and expectations for global companies to contribute to a better way of life through the consistent application of sustainable development standards and practices.

The objectives of this Roundtable include:

Understanding the additional sustainability challenges for business in less developed nations (with examples from Asia, Africa, and Latin America).

Building additional competencies on how to avoid human rights abuses, corruptive practices and environmental degradation under weak legal frameworks throughout the value chain.

Discussing opportunities for cooperation and activating partnerships with business, government, academia, NGO’s and other organizations on managing social responsibility in less developed nations.

Developing business strategies for strengthening sustainability performance and competitiveness in developing country markets.
