Water resources are increasingly becoming a strategic issue for business and society. Amongst the most important factors are the impacts of climate change, rapid industrialization and a fast growing population in regions with limited water availability as well as a heavy debate as to what extent water is an economic good or not? Industry is already being accused for using up the drinking water that communities depend on, while governments subsidize the majority of water resources used on agricultural land. Water pollution is also an immense challenge, especially in some developing countries.

More specifically, these factors pose risks to business such as the availability of water to maintain
operations throughout the year as well as sharpened legislation that may lead to penalties, reputational
damage and even to hostility against the company. In addition, every company is confronted with the moral matter of how it is impacting drinking water access of the adjacent population and the ecosystem.
The objectives of this Roundtable include:

  • Understanding water risks for business and defining strategies to maintain business in markets
  • that increasingly suffer from water scarcity.
  • Building additional competencies on how to calculate water footprints and how to minimize the
  • use of virtual water.
  • Discussing opportunities for cooperation and activating partnerships with business, government,
  • academia, NGO’s and other organizations on water issues and on managing water resources.

The Roundtable is structured to provide a highly interactive process of discussion among approximately
35 global environmental and sustainability leaders.

It is an invitation-only event and no media will attend.
