Alcan Recognized as a High-Performing and Sustainability-Driven Company

Montreal, Canada, September 5, 2002 - Alcan Inc. is pleased to announce that it has been selected as a component of the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World) in recognition of its on-going efforts to implement sustainability within its businesses.

Alcan's position in the DJSI World will be effective September 23, 2002. The Company joins over 300 companies from 23 countries that lead their industries in sustainability issues. Alcan is ranked in the top ten per cent of companies in the aluminum – steel sector assessed for the index.

This news follows the recent announcement that Alcan was recognized in Johannesburg with a United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and International Chamber of Commerce award for excellence in sustainable development for its novel and innovative International Micro-Business Network that helps grade school students develop entrepreneurial and environmental skills and experience.
