A Summary of this event is available here.

Global companies face additional challenges when doing business in less developed nations. Poverty, substantial income disparities, insufficient infrastructure, weak and often corrupt governance structures, lack of security and low enforcement of the law counteract a functioning market.

Under these circumstances global companies face unique challenges to live up to their corporate responsibility standards. Since their stakeholders expect high ethical and environmental standards to apply worldwide, multinational enterprises must take extra care in their own and supply chain operations– or risk losing their license to operate.  In an increasing number of less developed nations, well-informed members of civil society are expressing their concerns and expectations for global companies to contribute to a better way of life through the consistent application of sustainable development standards and practices.

The objectives of this Roundtable include:

  • Understanding the additional sustainability challenges for business in less developed nations (with examples from Asia, Africa, and Latin America).
  • Building additional competencies on how to avoid human rights abuses, corruptive practices and environmental degradation under weak legal frameworks throughout the value chain.
  • Discussing opportunities for cooperation and activating partnerships with business, government, academia, NGO’s and other organizations on managing social responsibility in less developed nations.
  • Developing business strategies for strengthening sustainability performance and competitiveness in developing country markets.
